BIOCDM

Title of the Sub-Project:
Biotech Clusters Development and Management - BIOCDM

Description:
Although Lombardy Region contains a Biotech cluster with the significant presence of scientists in Universities and research centres, there are no academic spin-offs. Therefore, the BIOCDM project aims to foster the creation of these academic spin-offs to ensure the endurance and future growth of the cluster.

Within the project the first task is to conduct a survey at regional level, create a comprehensive database of the biotech companies in Lombardia, and identify appropriate means of dissemination of the collected data which will will be done by the lead participant. The second task is to provide, through a scouting activity, a picture of the research projects in biotechnology carried out in the scientific and academic institutions, and suitable for the creation of academic spin-offs. The third major task is to carry out directly three scientific projects of applied research with potential for the creation of academic spin-offs. Two projects are carried out independently by the Università degli Studi di Milano and Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. The projects concern the identification of soy protein peptides with hypocholesterolemic properties for potential use in lipid-lowering therapy and the production of fine chemicals from recombinant micro-organism. A third project is carried out by the University of Applied Sciences Wels (Upper Austria) and concerns investigation of selected pharmacological effects of soy genuine isoflavones.

BIOCDM contributes to all the strategic goals of REGINS. It enhances and supports inter-regional cooperation as well as sustainable know-how transfer. The framework developed for the survey of biotech companies will represent an effective and tested base for conducting similar surveys in the other biotech clusters. Furthermore, the project allows the exchange of experience in the field of biotechnology. It particularly strengthens the collaboration between participants of different regions in carrying out research activities in healthcare biotechnology.
A specific work package is dedicated to the identification of adequate instruments for the diffusion of the project results through dissemination activities.
Moreover, BIOCDM ensures networking and collaboration between participants also aimed at circulating the methodologies developed and the scientific results achieved in the project. It fosters the development of new companies originated from universities. The scientific projects carried out within BIOCDM are suitable for the creation of new companies, thus reinforcing the industrial base of the cluster and its links with the academic environment.
