InpropTitle of the Sub-Project: INPROP - A new service for providing the inertia properties of vehicles and their sub systems for virtual reality and mechatronics applications Description: In order to develop (i.e. design, construct and test) vehicles which are safe and environmentally friendly, it is imperative to have detailed knowledge about the physical phenomena referring to vehicle dynamics. Mathematical (computer) simulations (e.g. virtual reality) contribute significantly to this purpose and allow strategic innovative hints to the research and development process. But reliable simulations require accurate measurements of vehicle inertial parameters, which raises difficulties. Automotive and aerospace industries have to rely on specialised high-tech Small and Medium-sized Entreprises providing the measurement of inertia properties of vehicles and their subsystems. Politecnico di Milano can transfer the technology for measuring inertia properties to Small Enterprises from Lombardy Region to enable them to provide this service. The assessment of the measurement accuracy of the inertia properties of a vehicle (and its subsystem) is an important need. There are currently no worldwide standards stating the tolerance by which the inertia properties of vehicles and satellites have to be known. The preliminary core of such a world standard will be provided by this sub-project. The accurate measurement of the inertial characteristics of vehicles can be performed at the Politecnico di Milano where an original measuring rig (in two different versions) is available. The measurement error of the rig depends on the measurement procedure employed. Within the INPROP project the right procedure has to be defined for later technological transfer to SME which can provide the service. This project especially serves the overall Regins goal to enhance cooperation between the public and the private sector: Both University of Stuttgart and Politecnico di Milano cooperate strongly with the private sector. The result of the Sub-Project will be to deliver to interested companies the know-how to provide a high value technological service. Moreover, the information will be provided directly to other industrial partners within Lombardy and Stuttgart Region interested in the service (measurement of the inertia properties).
