SHEMET

Title of the Sub-Project:
SHEMET - Applicability of Casting Resin Tools in Sheet Metal Forming

Description:
The production of conventional sheet metal forming tools for the series production of automotive body parts is time-consuming and causes high costs. Very often the geometry has to be changed due to design changes. Another reason is the optimisation of the sheet forming process. This is the case especially for prototyping tools and for tools of special automotive body parts of small series.

Three main problems have to be addressed:
1.) In these cases the most important requirements are easy and small-cost production of the tools and their fast modification possibility.
2.) The actuality of the project is emphasized nowadays using high strength steels (HSS), advanced high strength steels (AHSS) and light metal sheet respectively.
3.) In both partner areas a lot of tool and die makers are residing and acting as suppliers for the automotive industry. Furthermore the automotive industry itself has own tool and die shops. Nowadays the situation in the tool industry is very critical due to the severe competition with tool and die makers from extra-European countries. Especially the Stuttgart region is a center of tool and die industry in Germany.

The needs described above can be addressed by using elastomer or resin tools eventually with coating. Despite considerable research on this field a lot of questions remain open. Therefore the goals of the project are:
- Design and material (filler, coating) of the new casting resin
tools will be optimised by using FEM-analyses
- Otherwise new optimised tools must be built and tested in
relation to useful time of the tools and dimensional stability
  of the parts.
- Another purpose of the project is to develop guidelines for
the design and construction of prototyping tools and tools of   small series.

Interregional cooperation will be a main advantage of the project: The IFU Stuttgart is a leading institution on the field of sheet metal forming and has a lot of experience in producing and testing prototype tools. The SZE Györ, the most important education institution in the automotive industry of Western-Hungary, has considerable experience in sheet-metal forming. Knowledge of the partners will be shared and can be used in all regions. The results of the project will be used by the companies of the automotive industry, tool and die makers and companies producing small series or the responding equipment.
