Title of the Sub-Project:
3D-CAD/Virtual Reality Fitness Check for SME: Visualization and Simulation Ability in the Product Development Process

Description:
3D-CAD is a necessary prerequisite for using state of the art simulation and visualization techniques. Due to modern calculation techniques and availability of powerful computers it is possible to analyse and improve either the physical behaviour of structures and/or their manufacturing processes fast and reliably today. 3D-CAD systems help to overcome typical hindrances, such as low flexibility and long development times. Combined with modern visualization techniques, such as VR, knowledge from calculations of different development teams can be faster and better communicated. Therefore, within worldwide supply chains demand for these new techniques is increasing.

But the application of such 3D-CAD systems is related to high investment costs which is a decisive barrier for Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs). Moreover, negative experience reported by comparable enterprises let the SMEs shrink back from a system migration from 2D to 3D-CAD-systems. Furthermore, there are also weak points in the application of relatively qualified 3D-CAD application, which impair a comprehensive and complex cooperation with technologically demanding customers.

By a standardized 3D-CAD/VR-check a sensible tool will be created, which makes it easy for SMEs to examine the prerequisites for and opportunities of 3D-CAD/VR-systems within their enterprises. In addition SMEs get the opportunity to coordinate project obstacles with their expectations. The 3D-CAD/VR-check shall clarify the general expectation attitude of OEM in vehicle engineering and uncover deficits in the area of cooperation with technological demanding customers.

As a further result of the competence-check, indications for the further development of already established CAD-surroundings arise. Furthermore the project offers for the involved companies an uncomplicated and fast access to modern 3D-CAD, visualization and simulation methods as well as to qualified discussion partners with its network partners (e.g. VDC). Thus first solutions for the companies will be shown in order to overcome the identified deficits of the 3D-CAD/VR-check

The developed application tool guarantees the sustainable know-how transfer of the latest 3-CAD- and VR-technology. Inter-regional knowledge transfer between the two automotive clusters in UA and BW is ensured by an objective instrument which makes the level of technology-knowledge transparent and comparable. Inter-regional co-operation between OEM and SME is enhanced and supported.
