MAAGYSTitle of the Sub-Project: MAAGYS - Molecular biological screening (multianalyte) assay for gynaecological smear diagnostic in routine laboratories Description: Genital infections play a major role in Gynaecology and Obstetrics. In general there are infections with bacteria or fungi which may cause a multitude of disease and may especially cause premature contractions and per-term delivery at pregnant women. On the other hand viral infections with human papilloma viruses may cause preneoplastic or neoplastic lesions of the cervix uteri as well as of the vulva and vagina. Molecular microbiological and virological diagnostics as well as molecular prediction of a possible risk for women with HPV infections to develop genital cancer may improve the currently used cervical cancer screening strategies as well as treatment algorithm and regimens for women with preneoplastic lesions or bacterial/fungi infection of the genital tract. A fast and accurate screening method would improve medical diagnostics significantly and advance preventive woman medicine drastically. The objective of this project is to realise such a screening. All potentially harmful micro-organisms and viruses of the vaginal milieu will be quantitatively measured and analysed. In parallel, preneoplastic lesions can be characterised on a molecular level. This multi-analyte assay will be used for acute and preventive strategies. For the first time a routine diagnostics tool will be available, which gives the gynaecologist a complete picture of the patient's microbial and viral status. This inter-regional project will be the starting point of ongoing and sustainable cooperation between the project partners. Knowing that the need for microbial and viral screenings in medicine is widespread, a cooperation beyond the realms of this project is most likely. Moreover, the different expertise of the project partners will guarantee a fundamental know-how transfer. The private sector will participate in this project by providing platform technology and multi-analyte (DNA) assay expertise. The results of the project will be placed on the market, therefore a partnership with the private sector is guaranteed.
