DITICETitle of the Sub-Project: DITICE - Drop Impact Technologies for cleaner Internal Combustion Engines Description: Along with the new EU emission regulations for passenger cars, in 2005 the CO emission of passenger cars as well as NOx and PM emissions should be strongly reduced. Until 2008 another 50% cut of NOx emissions is expected. Therefore, the emergence of emissions have to be examined to develop new technologies for combustion engines minimising emissions. In modern engines fuel is injected at high pressure and may reach the piston/cylinder wall sticking on it or reatomising, with different effects on the combustion outcomes. The reatomisation effect is mainly due to wall/spray heat and mass transfer, that is driven by wall conditions (temperature, roughness etc.). The DITICE sub-project will evidence the quantitative influence of these wall conditions on the impact of outcomes to suggest ways to reduce emissions. Unburnt fuel emission reduction by better control of the secondary atomisation has already been demonstrated indirectly. The goals of DITICE are therefore: 1) deriving droplet wall interaction models applicable to the usual range of conditions present during operation of engines 2) quantifying the effects of surface roughness and material characteristics on the impact regimes 3) finding technical implementation possibilities for a better control of emissions. Cooperation and know-how transfer between the participating regions will be ensured through coordination and common dissemination. Both partners work on complimentary research tasks. Moreover, this REGINS sub-project will be an occasion to build up a unified database of the drop impact regimes and outcomes. The dissemination activities, beside joint publications in international conferences and a website to inform about the project results, includes a workshop open to automotive industries and other regional research groups not directly involved in the present project.
